Streetlighting Projects
Southern has become one of the leading streetlight design-builders in the United States through assisting cities and public agencies develop, finance, design and convert existing HPS and LPS streetlights to LED and induction lighting. We have converted and / or audited more than 110,000 streetlights since 2011 alone, including 37,600 lights for the City of San Diego. We have also been maintaining more than 28,000 municipal streetlights for San Diego Gas and Electric for the past ten years. Below are many of the cities we currently support and/or have completed projects.
City of San Diego
- Design-built the conversion of 34,600 HPS lights to induction lights, reducing the City’s energy bill by $1.8 million.
- Design-built the replacement of 3,000 post top lights located downtown, installing and commissioning the GE Light Grid Adaptive Controls System.
San Diego and GE Lighting are exploring just how intelligent the eighth-largest city in the United States can be. Transforming the iconic Gaslamp Quarter (and every other city light) with new software-enabled LEDs offers the potential to improve the city in many ways, even beyond energy savings. City of Temecula
- Audited 7,996 lights.

Western Riverside Council of Governments
- Assisted in development of a regional streetlighting program for its 18 member agencies, auditing more than 60,000 lights.
- Assistied with truing-up streetlight records and calculating utility bill errors.
City of Corona
- Audited 192 lights.

GPS-Enabled Lighting to Save Oceanside, California, More than Half a Million Dollars Annually (July 15, 2015)
As part of its commitment to reduce energy consumption, the City of Oceanside recently installed more than 7,700 GE LED roadway fixtures equipped with a GPS-enabled controls system.
Expected to drive energy and maintenance savings of approximately $600,000 annually, the installation of GE LED fixtures with LightGrid™ controls continues to position the city as a leader in connected and energy-saving solutions.
City of Oceanside
- Turnkey design-build project, replacing 8,676 lights along roadways, neighborhoods, and downtown, including the iconic Oceanside Pier.
- Installed and commissioned the GE Light Grid Adaptive Controls system citywide.
City of Escondido
- Installed 274 LED roadway lights in city-designed test bed.
City of Hemet
- Provided 46 LED lights for parks for two parks under piggyback purchase order.
- Audited 2,189 lights.

- Maintained 28,000+ LS-1 HPS and LPS streetlights.
- Replaced knockdowns, repaired wiring, re-lamped luminaires, maintained wiring.
