Project Description: Colorado River Aqueduct Switchyards and Head Gates Rehabilitation

Owner: Metropolitan Water District of Southern California

Contract Amount: $9,000,000.00

This project was constructed as design build with Engineering Partners Inc. providing the electrical design. The majority of the work was performed during two 21-day shutdowns of the aqueduct. All work was successfully completed on time.

The work consisted of the following at each of the five Colorado River Aqueduct Pumping Plants (Intake, Gene, Iron, Eagle & Hinds):

  • Replaced 12 high voltage (230 & 69kV) oil circuit breakers and appurtenances at each of the pumping plants with new SF6 Gas Circuit Breakers. The oil circuit breakers contained PCB.
  • Replacement of the Peddler 34.5kV Substation.
  • Replaced 300 6.9kV instrument transformers in the pumping plant switch houses at each of the five pumping plants.
  • Refurbished the drive components in 15 head gates. This consisted of the following:
    • New power, control and signal cables were installed from the pump house control rooms to the head gate houses.
    • Existing lead-sheathed cable was removed and disposed of.
    • New VFD’s, Motors, Control Panels, Lubrication Systems and Stems were installed for each of the gates.
    • Lead paint was removed and new coatings provided.
