Colorado River Aqueduct
Project
Description: Colorado River Aqueduct Switchyards and Head Gates Rehabilitation
Owner:
Metropolitan Water District of Southern California
Contract
Amount: $9,000,000.00
This project
was constructed as design build with Engineering Partners Inc. providing
the electrical design. The majority of the work was performed during
two 21-day shutdowns of the aqueduct. All work was successfully completed
on time.
The work
consisted of the following at each of the five Colorado River Aqueduct
Pumping Plants (Intake, Gene, Iron, Eagle & Hinds):
- Replaced 12 high voltage (230 & 69kV) oil circuit breakers
and appurtenances at each of the pumping plants with new SF6 Gas
Circuit Breakers. The oil circuit breakers contained PCB.
- Replacement of the Peddler 34.5kV Substation.
- Replaced 300 6.9kV instrument transformers in the pumping plant
switch houses at each of the five pumping plants.
- Refurbished the drive components in 15 head gates. This consisted
of the following:
- New power, control and signal cables were installed from the
pump house control rooms to the head gate houses.
- Existing lead-sheathed cable was removed and disposed of.
- New VFDs, Motors, Control Panels, Lubrication Systems
and Stems were installed for each of the gates.
- Lead paint was removed and new coatings provided.
